Can you see the motifs that are present on the fabric in the photo? This print is known as Ajrakh. The popular story that local printers believe is that Ajrakh means “keep it today.” It is also linked to azrakh, which is the Arabic word for indigo, a blue plant which flourished in the arid ecology of Kachchh until the earthquake in 1956. Ajrakh uses complex geometry to create starry constellations in colour shades of indigo, black and white across lengths of cloth. The shapes and motifs of Ajrakh reflect the Islamic architectural design involving intricate jali windows and trefoil arches. Isn’t it fascinating?
