Colours & Nature For February 2022

  1. Peacock Butterfly

The colourful butterfly photographed here is called Inachis io, also known as the peacock butterfly. Considered as one of the most beautiful butterflies in United Kingdom, it has recently expanded its range in Scotland. The peacock butterfly is often seen in buildings and trees, appearing quite early in spring. It has interesting colours on its body, flaunting brownish-red wings, each with a single, large peacock-feather-like eyespot used to scare away predators. It rests with its wings closed, showing its almost black, well-camouflaged underside. Are you as fascinated as we are to learn about this insect?

  2. Andean Cock-of-the-Rock

This delightful bird in the photograph is known as Andean cock-of-the-rock. It is not any other ordinary large cotingid bird native to South America; it is the national bird of Peru! The first alleged example of this bird’s species was documented in the mid-1700s during a research expedition that was carried out by the explorer and biologist, Sir Joshua Wilson. This bird is found in tropical and subtropical rainforests near rocky areas, where it builds its nests. Speaking of its colours, it flaunts a bright orange hue in combination with black. It has a heavy body, a broad-based bill and also sports a remarkable half-moon crest on its head, which is a sight for sore eyes!
