Colours & Gems For January 2023

Red Gem
  1. Green Stone

    Tsavorite

The gemstone that you can see in the picture is called Tsavorite. A rare member of the garnet family, it is considered the birthstone for January borns. It flaunts a rich, deep green hue but is also seen in different colours such as yellow. Discovered in Tsavo National Park, Kenya in 1967 by Campbell Bridges, it was introduced to the trade in the 1970s. It was named by Tiffany's Henry Platt, along with Campbell Bridges in 1974. What is interesting to note is that it looks like an emerald but is more brilliant and durable. As this gemstone is not quite popular, it is far less expensive than an emerald. The gemstone is in demand more by collectors and connoisseurs rather than by the general public.

  2. Dark And Bright red Stone

    Garnet

The fascinating blood-red gemstone that is photographed here is known as garnet. The name originates from the medieval Latin word ‘granatus’, meaning ‘pomegranate’, owing to its mesmerising colour. During the Bronze Age, garnets were used as gemstones as well as abrasives. Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt have been seen with necklaces adorned with red garnets. In Ancient Rome, signet rings had garnet intaglios, which were used to stamp wax and secure confidential and official documents. During the Middle Ages, individuals from high ranks such as the clergy and nobility preferred red garnets. However, in present times, this gemstone is considered the birthstone of January babies. It is believed to bring good fortune, good health and joy to its wearers. You can take inspiration from this gorgeous hue and add a splash of striking red for an accent wall in your home!

  1. Dianthus Green Ball

    Green Ball Dianthus

Do you have a green thumb? If you do, we have something that will surely interest you. The above photograph is not photoshopped! What you are looking at is a flower called Dianthus. If a flower could be the life of the party, the flower pictured here would be just that! The soft and fuzzy round, lime-coloured balls are sure to be a fun addition to containers and vases. A perennial plant, this natural green colour flower packs a ton of visual punch. You can grow this flower in your garden as well as use them in bouquets.

  2. Luna Moth

    Luna Moth

The creature in the photograph is called the Luna Moth, also known as the American Moon Moth. It is a Nearctic moth and belongs to a group commonly known as giant silk moths. While you may think that its lime-green coloured appearance is what would be its most striking aspect, the fact is that it is rarely seen by humans. This is because it has an extremely brief adult life and nocturnal flying time. Another interesting aspect of this creature is that it is a favourite snack for bats, so as a defense mechanism, it spins its wings on its wingtips in circular motion, which disorients the bats so much that it is often able to make an escape! Fascinating, isn’t it?
