Did you know that the history of the red carpet is rather complex and grim as opposed to its modern-day associations? Its journey can be traced back to its first appearance in a Greek tragedy in 458 BC to a railway station in 1902 and finally to showbiz! The first known reference to the red carpet was arguably made in Agamemnon, a play written by Aeschylus, a Greek playwright, where Agamemnon’s wife known as Clytemnestra rolled down a ‘crimson carpet’ for the king after his return home having won the Trojan War. Interestingly, with the colour at that time associated with the gods and not meant for the mortals, asking him to walk the “crimson carpet”, was actually an invitation to his death. Fascinating, isn’t it?
