Moving homes is a process full of mixed emotions. On one hand, it marks the beginning of a new and exciting adventure in a new locality surrounded by new neighbours while on the other, it brings sadness having to leave behind an old home where you have created some beautiful memories.
Mixed emotions cause moving stress but you can make your move memorably happy than remarkably hard too. This blog shares seven useful ways to prepare yourself for a less stressful move. It also covers some personal experiences of individuals who have moved homes and their tips on how to make the move easier.Let’s get started with the seven tips before hearing it straight from them.
1. Clear out the clutter
It is best to tackle this one first: getting rid of the clutter will help you be, and feel, more organised. It will also ensure that when you begin packing, you will only be packing the things that you really need. There is nothing more frustrating than packing items you are only going to end up getting rid of after the move.
2. Make a packing list
Be organised. Jot down everything! Before you pack anything, create a system. Number each and every box you pack and write the contents on your list.
3. Packing supplies
You will need lots of boxes and packing materials – in fact, even more than you think. Don’t forget to keep aside about 10 boxes for last-minute moving day items too. You can also get in touch with shipping companies to rent out boxes so that you don’t end up buying boxes for just one use.
4. Colour code
Allocate a specific colour for each room in your new home and put coloured stickers on each box. In your new home, tape a matching sticker on the door of each room so that the movers know where to put all your belongings.
5. Keep valuables safe
Ensure that valuable possessions such as precious jewellery and family heirlooms are safe with you. Keep important papers and phone numbers with you as well.
6. Get any major updates done before you move in
Planning to switch up the kitchen cabinets or give the walls a coat of fresh paint? It is wise to finish all major changes before you move in- this way you don’t have to worry about moving the furniture or prepare for a major update right after you move in.
7. Get proper sleep and eat well
Yes, you read that right! These are important factors in keeping you healthy and happy during the transition from your old house to a new one. Ensure you receive enough sleep and consume a balanced diet.
Those were seven points to keep in mind while moving into a new house. Let us now take you straight to interesting stories from people who thought well-ahead and planned their transition into a new home smartly to avoid hassles.
What do you imagine when we say naughty kids let loose in the house? Mess? Total chaos? Yes, this is the usual thought that forms in one’s head. Walls of every room take a beating because of dirty hands, football marks, juice spills, ink spills and so on. This is exactly what a mother from Mumbai had to endure because of her two young sons aged 5 years and 7 years. The mischievous duo wouldn’t spare even one wall, covering it all with their scribbles or a sketch of their favourite superheroes. Let’s hear more about it from her and how she tackled this issue while moving into her new home in Mumbai.
Having kids in the house can be fun and challenging both. My two love using the walls of the house as a canvas. The older one loves to play football indoors with his brother and this leaves our walls with football stains as well.
When my husband got a job transfer from Kolkata to Mumbai, I didn’t want our new house walls to look messy but also didn’t want to curb my kids’ freedom of expression. Kids need to be kids. It is their age to explore and unleash their creativity!
Keeping this in mind, my husband and I decided to choose washable wall paint for our walls. We painted the new house before moving into it using Berger’s revolutionary washable wall paint Easy Clean.
I have to tell you that Berger’s Express Painting team is extremely professional and has skilled painters who know how to do their job. Their painting application technique using automated tools is impressive. My husband used to go to check on the painting progress and I used to accompany him on some days to see as well. There was a dedicated supervisor who would oversee the task and address all our queries. It has been more than 7 months of us moving into the new apartment and the Berger colour on the walls looks fabulous. My kids haven’t changed their old habits of drawing on the walls and indoor football but I am not worked up anymore, thanks to the washable paint on all the walls. I wash off all the stains easily with a wet cloth and it goes away like magic!

Moving on, let us talk of bachelor pads. Didn’t you picture a cool room with a comfy couch, a great entertainment system and striking lighting fixtures? What if the walls had seepages and leakage issues? A total mood dampener, right? Now that’s exactly how Vinay Kaul felt when he moved into his first pad. Let’s hear straight from the horse’s mouth!
When I moved into my bachelor pad, I was excited because of my new-found freedom. I was going to be staying alone in my own home and I was thrilled to set it up. But when I stepped in, I saw that the walls were flaking. There were seepage and leakage issues as well. I didn’t want to give up on this particular flat because the locality was perfect and strategically located. My office was about ten minutes from this place, saving me the hassle of commuting. Even the malls, supermarkets, popular eateries and pubs were close by. The flat had an excellent view of Pune and I didn’t want to miss that either.
I called up Berger’s Home Shield experts who inspected the walls and gave customised solutions using their Moisture Meter. I can’t imagine what the situation would have been if I were to be stuck with leaky walls during the heavy downpour in Pune. Thanks to the team, I could enjoy the rains and not worry about wall leakages.

Now that’s what we call a smart decision. You can save yourself the headache and stress associated with leaky walls and seepages if you nip it in the bud or take control of the challenging situation.
Finally, we have a lovely couple who shifted homes and their amusing story. Listen to them talk about what happens when two opposites attract and have to live under the same roof!
I am a software developer and my husband is a financial analyst. Ours was a love marriage after six years of courtship. We both have different tastes and beg to differ about almost everything under the sun, be it politics, food or vacation destination. So, it comes as no surprise if I say we both have different takes on colours too. Thanks to Berger Paints India, we both got what we wanted!
