What makes Holi one of the most-loved festivals in India is the playfulness and excitement associated with it. It is a day full of merrymaking and painting the town red, green, blue and just about every other shade you can think of! However, did you know that the colourful powders were traditionally prepared from Ayurvedic herbs such as neem and henna for green, kumkum and Raktachandan for red, haldi for yellow, Jacaranda flowers for blue and many other amazing herbs like Bilva, Yellow Chrysanthemums, Amaltas and Marigold?

These herbs were grounded to powder patiently to derive the wonderful colours that we know of and are believed to have Kapha-reducing property and the ability to detox the skin. Fascinating, isn’t it?

This year, if you are going to celebrate Holi, we suggest you consciously play an Ayurvedic Holi with natural colours, preferably indoors, keeping in mind your safety and of the ones around you!

Furthermore, even the five basic elements of Ayurveda are associated with one colour each, namely yellow for Prithvi, deep blue for Jala, light blue for Aakash, green for Vayu and red for Agni. Any disturbances in these elements are shown to create imbalances in the body, mind and soul.

The best part about Holi is treating ourselves to a mélange of refreshing drinks, foods and rejuvenating wellness therapies. Holi drinks such as Thandai and Kaanji serve as delicious coolants and are a great source of anti-oxidants. Thandai, with its milk flavour, is packed with the goodness of almonds, fennel seeds, watermelon seeds and rose petals while Kaanji, a fermented drink is filled with rich nutrients and fibre.
